This red-spotted newt releases a poisonous toxin called tetrodotoxin, or TTX. A drop of TTX is enough to kill a person, although some people affected may appear dead when they are actually unconscious.
Newts can regenerate lost or damaged body parts, including front or back legs, tail, lens of an eye, and even the spinal cord. Medical researchers are studying newts for clues to body-part regeneration.
