Unlike most smaller bats who use their ears to find food at night—a technique called echolocation—this fruit bat uses its sharp senses of smell and sight when it flies in search of ripe fruit at night.

Bat knees actually face backwards, and bats have special tendons that hold their toes in place when they hang upside down. In this position, bats don't expend any energy. They have to flex their muscles to release from the upside-down position.
