Chicago, Illinois, July 16, 2008—Skinny legs and all, a Chilean flamingo stands guard over two eggs at the Lincoln Park Zoo. This is the first time in the zoo's history that their flamingo flocks have laid eggs. The eggs should hatch in approximately four weeks.

The pale pink, gregarious birds are native to South America, where they live in shallow, salty lakes and feed on invertebrates, seeds, and algae. Human activities such as egg harvesting are the birds' main threats.
