New Orleans, Louisiana, September 1, 2008--Water spills over the levee wall of the Industrial Canal as Hurricane Gustav slams into the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Gustav made landfall on Monday as a Category 2 storm near Cocodrie, Louisiana, about 72 miles (116 kilometers) southwest of New Orleans. The storm hit the coast with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles (177 kilometers) an hour.

In the largest evacuation in state history, almost two million people fled the coastal regions of Louisiana ahead of the storm, prompted by fears of devastation similar to what happened when New Orleans' levees broke after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
